The television show depicts the following five families: Davis, Jackson, Peterson, Soto and Whitman. Robert Davis Sr., the patriarch of the Davis family, is widowed and doing his best to raise two teenage sons: Robert (Robbie) Jr. and Devin. Debbie Jackson is a single parent in the Jackson household also dealing with the challenges of raising two teenage sons: Barrett and Jaiden.
The Petersons, Jacob and Margie, are a couple raising one teenage daughter: Hannah. The Sotos, Jorge and Maria, are a couple without children. Lastly, the Whitmans, Walter and Lydia, have a teenage daughter (Lauren) and a teenage son (Weston or Wes).
The lives of the five families intertwine; their internal and external struggles are showcased to make for a dramatic, sometimes comical, but always entertaining television show.
