In 1958 New Jersey, middle-aged spinster Edith "Edie" O'Leary desperately wants to prove she can care for children after a string of disastrous babysitting jobs left her blacklisted by every respectable family in town. When a cryptic newspaper ad seeks someone who “can keep a secret and handle energetic twin boys,” Edie answers—only to discover the twins belong to the powerful (but surprisingly domestic) Falconi crime family. Rival gangsters are circling, the twins are mischief incarnate, and Edie must become both surrogate mother and unlikely protector while discovering that the family she always wanted might be the one that needs her most.
